After School Director
Shelela Smith began her career in the summer of 2005 as a group leader for Bird Street Summer Day Getaway Program in Dorchester. At this point Shelela discovered she wanted a career working with children. In September 2005 she became a Teaching Associate for Boston Public Schools at the Nathan Hale Elementary School. Shelela worked at the Nathan Hale for 5 years serving in their afterschool.
In January of 2009 a position opened up to become a Site Director for the Orchard Gardens Pilot K-8th grade school in Roxbury, licensed by the Department of Early Education & Care. Shelela worked at Orchard Gardens for seven years and also became a paraprofessional in the daytime while operating the after school in the evening. Shelela was then offered a position in 2010 to get the afterschool program up and running at the Russell Elementary School where they were licensed for 26 children. Due to the capacity of the kids enrolled in the afterschool Shelela had to increase their license to 39 because the program was such a success.
Shelela is currently enrolled in Cambridge College and anticipates on graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 2019.
